The second child arrives! After a first phase of anxiety and euphoria, parents begin to question how, in practice, they can best manage the presence of two children, especially if the first-born is still a small child. For walking, the choice usually falls between two solutions, both valid, but different and with different pros and cons: the sibling stroller and the platform, also called "little brother".
What is the platform
The footboard or “little brother” is an axle equipped with wheels that hooks onto the frame of the stroller or pram, at the rear. It looks like a small skateboard and can have one or two wheels.
What is a sibling stroller
It is a stroller with a larger frame as it must accommodate two seats, of different sizes to make it possible to use it for two children of different ages. It can have the seats side by side or placed in a row, one behind the other.
When the platform is indicated
It is advisable to use the platform when the older brother who will have to use it is perfectly able to balance and walk.
When the sibling stroller is indicated
Most sibling strollers start at the age of 0+.
The pros of the platform
- The small size. Surely the small size of a platform plays in favor as regards the handling of the stroller.
- Weight. A stroller with a platform weighs less and requires less effort on the part of the operator.
- The ease of removal. The platform hooks and unhooks easily and this makes loading into the machine easier.
The cons of the platform
- It can only be used from a certain age onwards.
- The child must necessarily stand or sit at the most, holding the stroller with his hands. This prevents him from being able to sleep.
- It cannot be used for walking long distances.
The pros of the sibling stroller
- Comfort for both children. With the sibling stroller the two siblings will be comfortably seated or lying down, in safety.
- The age of use is not a limit as it can be used immediately.
- Long distances can be covered on foot.
The cons of the sibling stroller
- The large size. The sibling stroller is considerably more bulky than a single-seater stroller and this can make some handling operations more difficult (getting into the lift, loading into the car, etc.).
- The weight is higher than the single-seater and this requires a greater effort on the part of those who maneuver it.
- The folding of the sibling stroller is not very compact due to the bulkier frame.
